How to Color a Paper Mache Cat Mask Base Without any Felt

I've been there- Just starting out making your first few sets of animal gear, so your access to high quality materials is very limited. While felt can be relatively low priced, it's finicky and comes in small sheets.

I have good news! You don't need any felt to make a good cat mask! 

Below I share the steps to completely altering a blank white cat mask and turning it into a fully colored masterpiece :) If you prefer visuals, I've embedded a video link to my tutorial on the subject as well!

 

Materials Needed:

-Blank White Therian Cat Mask Base

-Acrylic Paint

-Colored pencils

 

Steps:

-Use acrylic paint to block our your color patterns. 

-Allow to fully dry

-Go back in and begin lightly layering colored pencil wisps to imitate fur/hairs

-Use a small amount of white paint to add highlights near the eyes and on the nose

 

Tips:

-Always color in the direction the fur is going- as a general rule of thumb, fur faces away from the nose and travels outwards. You can research photos of your animal to get a better look at how that specific creature's fur pattern lays

-Switch between colored pencils frequently to create an even layer affect

-use colors of pencils just slightly lighter and darker than your base paint color, it helps add depth
